Job Duties and Responsibilities

• Veteran Advocacy Specialists (VAS) are responsible for triaging veterans that have recently signed with us. You are their strategic guide, helping to map out their path to an increased combined disability rating. In this role, you can expect to do the following:
• Conduct triage calls with clients: 8 triage calls per day via our virtual phone system (Dialpad), averaging 5–6 hours of daily phone time. 
• Analyze and strategize: review past VA disability claims, approvals, and denials, and identify gaps in previous evidence. 
• Connect medical evidence: identify opportunities to connect current medical conditions (including secondary conditions) back to the veteran's military service. 
• Build action plans: formulate detailed evidence-collection plans to support claims. 
• Manage appeals: discuss incoming VA decision letters with veterans and plan for a second round of appeals. 

What We Are Looking For (Core Competencies) 

During our interview process, we are looking for highly organized, analytical, and empathetic professionals who possess the following key skill sets:

• Systems-level thinking: the ability to analyze complex medical information and comprehend its relationship to the larger mission, to build cohesive narratives from time in service to the present day and create roadmaps for the journey ahead.
• Ability to control the call: our veterans have incredible stories, but our time with them is limited. You must possess the confidence and empathy to gracefully get the conversation back on track (e.g., "thank you so much for sharing that with me, but in order to make sure we maximize our time here today, please tell me more about this..."). 
• High-speed documentation: the ability to type and navigate technology quickly and accurately is critical in order to capture critical notes in the client’s file in real time while actively conducting a call.
• Medical/healthcare literacy (preferred): a background in healthcare, nursing, or medical terminology is a massive plus, as you will be reviewing and analyzing medical conditions daily.
