Job Description

Job Summary:

The Surgical Assistant plays a critical role in supporting surgeons during operative procedures by providing technical assistance and ensuring patient safety. This position requires certification as a first assistant or surgical assistant and involves collaborating closely with the surgical team to facilitate efficient and effective surgeries. Prior experience as a first or surgical assistant is preferred, along with current Basic Life Support certification.

Responsibilities:

• Assist surgeons during surgical procedures by providing technical and clinical support.
• Prepare and maintain the sterile field and surgical instruments.
• Ensure patient safety and monitor patient condition throughout procedures.
• Collaborate with the surgical team to anticipate surgeon needs and respond promptly.
• Maintain compliance with surgical protocols and safety standards.
• Participate in preoperative and postoperative patient care as directed.
• Document surgical assistance activities and maintain accurate records.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• High School diploma or equivalent education and training.
• Current certification as a first assistant (CFA), surgical assistant (CSA), or assistant in surgery by one of the following: National Board of Surgical Technology and Assisting (NBSTSA), National Surgical Assistant Association (NSAA), American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA), or National Assistant at Surgery Council (NASC).
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification at the Healthcare Professional Level.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Prior experience as a First Assistant or Surgical Assistant.

Special Considerations:

• Work performed in a surgical environment requiring adherence to sterile techniques and infection control protocols.
• May require flexibility to work various shifts based on surgical schedules.

Scheduling:

• Work schedule and shifts are determined by surgical case load and facility needs, potentially including day, evening, or weekend hours.
