Are you fascinated by zooplankton? Enchanted by smelt? Do you really, really love data? You can help to protect the ecology of California's Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta (Bay Delta) by applying your data management and analytical skills to the cause. The Department of Fish and Wildlife's Bay Delta Region and Interagency Ecological Program (IEP) Operations Program is looking for a detail-oriented individual to support a team of busy scientists to manage, organize, analyze, and deliver timely data to partners to inform water project operations and other important decisions that affect the ecological health of our estuary. Under the supervision of the IEP Operations Program Manager, the Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) will combine their technical expertise in data and database management with their understanding of diverse program operations to develop more efficient and consistent approaches to data management and delivery. The incumbent will use their strong leadership, coordination, and communication skills to maintain strong collaborative relationships with Departmental survey leads, partners, and researchers to improve and standardize data and metadata development and consistency across surveys and to advise on data use limitations. May participate in or serve as the lead on Project Work Teams or other technical teams. May mentor or train staff in data management, QA/QC, analysis, and effective communication of data findings through written descriptions and visual tools such as tables, maps, graphs, and more. This position may be eligible for a telework opportunity in accordance with departmental policies and operational needs. Employees are currently required to work in-person at least two (2) days per week. Beginning July 1, 2026, employees will be required to work in-person at least four (4) days per week in alignment with Executive Order N-22-25. Additional in-office days may be required based on operational needs.

Working Conditions

Ability to use a computer keyboard several hours a day. Involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods. Attend meetings and work with staff statewide to complete work assignments. Optionally, the incumbent may visit field studies with rough terrain and wet, slippery marine environments with extremes of heat and cold, though field studies are not a required job duty.

This position is located at the CDFW, Bay Delta Region office in Stockton, California, and offers the possibility of a telework agreement based on the Department's current Telework Policy.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with data management and analysis with a working knowledge of Structured Query Language (SQL), R, Python, or similar languages sufficient to manage existing and create new database structures and formats. Proficiency with Microsoft Access and Excel. Proficiency with spatial data using Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) or other geographic information system software is a plus, as is a record of developing collaborative data products and scientific publications.

4) Describe your experience with preparing scientific data and/or analytic products for publication (peer-reviewed or unpublished reports, oral or poster presentations, data sets, maps, etc.). What roles have you played in producing those products (e.g., writing, developing figures, analyzing data)?
